To Give Is To Receive (Day 3)

Yangon, Myanmar

Fullmoon

This is my third post on our overseas volunteering trip to Full Moon Orphanage and if you would like to read the previous posts, here are the links - Day 1 & Day 2.

The children wore the same shirt on the third day of our visit. They looked so cute and the girls could't resist taking a group picture with them. If you are wondering what is the yellowish-white paste applied on these kids' face, it is called thanaka which is made from ground bark to provide protection from sunburn and promote smooth skin.

The children begin their morning worship singing as they gather at the common hall. The singing start off with a cheerful tone and halfway through the session (2:30min onwards) , the children raise their hands and some close their eyes to focus and sing. I am not a christian and I do not understand what they are singing. But...I am so moved. For some reasons, I really really really want to cry so badly and I struggle to hold back my tears. It feels like these children are making a humble plea to god, "please pick me up and hold me." Every child in this orphanage has their own little story. I am not trying to be righteous but I must say for whatever reasons, it is still an irresponsible act to abandon your children in an orphanage. You have created a life...It is your responsibility to take care of your children, shower him or her with love and please don't take away their rights to have a complete family. It is like taking away a piece of their life and it is never going to be complete again.

The menu for lunch consists of rice, vermicelli, corn, eggs, mixed vegetables and hotdogs. These children has an amazing appetite and they ask for at least 2-3 times to refill the rice. It feels like they are stuffing themselves to eat as much as possible. I have no idea if they have enough food to eat everyday or if they get to eat meat in their diet. The villagers also come to the orphanage with big buckets to get free food. This makes me wonder that the children staying in the orphanage might be leading a better life than the villagers. A large population of the locals live in poverty and it is not unusual to see families living in self-made huts made with straw and wood along the roadside.

Father Joe, the founder of Full Moon orphanage, bring some of us to a tour around the village. They have built a windmill to power electricity for the home and also grow their own food. To sustain the home financially, the older kids will go out and work to earn money

Met this little girl in the village and she looked so cheeky in the second photo. My brother said this little girl look like me when I was small. I used to have such boy-cut hair style like her when I was in primary school. Do you think we kinda look alike too?

Fotor0328214915

The little girl hold my hands and followed us back to the home together with her brother. Heehee.. She likes me!

Back to the home and we begin the "finale" of the night. Here is my boy Jason and he has a lot of fun with this toy gun. My little cutie is so cute! I am so glad that he is able to join me on this volunteering trip. Throughout the three days, we sweat so much under the burning sun but I enjoy volunteering with Jason because we can share this meaningful experience.

Fotor0328205459

It is an evening with dance and laughter! We have our "Super Gangam Boy" (the boy in black t-shirt) who led us to dance Gangam Style.

Fotor0328211349

The last activity of the night is PiƱata. The children will take turns to hit the bag (full of candies) with a stick which is suspended from a rope until it breaks. The candies will then fall out from the bag. The children have some fun rushing to collect the candies.

Fotor0328215223

And it is time to say goodbye... We form a big circle and the kids take turns to shake hands and bid farewell to each and everyone of us. It is an emotional farewell with the kids saying, "Please come back again", "God bless you", "Hope to see you again", "We will miss you".

Fotor0328212010

Fotor032822044

Some of the children were teary-eyed and a few came to me and my boy to take photos. I really have no idea how we have impacted them but it was such a touching moment.

Goodbye Is Always The Hardest To Say...

I was on the verge of tears but I tried my best to hold back. I didn't want to let it be a sad goodbye. This home is a happy place and all these kids have so much fun playing, flying kites and running around freely. The kids stand along the road, wave and bid goodbye to us as our bus drives off. This must be the emotional goodbye ever.. And it hits me pondering what tomorrow brings for them after we have left.

Fotor0330214920

This volunteering trip to Myanmar with 5Cs is the most meaningful thing I have done with my boy. We were sunburned but it is all worth it to bring a smile on these kids'  face. This trip won't be possible without the dedicated effort of the project leaders and 5Cs committee. They are really a great bunch of people! Kudos to them!

.....Dear God, Please Bless These Children.

A Random Day in Frankfurt With Fujifilm X100S.

Frankfurt, Germany

[caption id="attachment_3106" align="aligncenter" width="611"]DSCF0166 Jessica, Me, Chloe & Cindy[/caption]

This is my 4th time to Frankfurt. I would love to explore out of Frankfurt but the weather was such a bitch. The temperate was still below zero degree celsius even though it was mid of March. I visited Frankfurt in March last year and it was a pleasant weather to venture out to Heidelberg. Oh mannnn...Will spring ever come??

[caption id="attachment_3107" align="aligncenter" width="611"]DSCF0165 Jessica, Stella, Chloe & Cindy[/caption]

We are the GENERATION-Y kids a.k.a the 90s strawberries (Strawberry Generation). The "Old School" Generation might have prejudices against us that we "bruise easily" like strawberries. Hey, we may look fragile or SYT (Sweet Young Things) but we are strong and independent. Alright...I am #justcomplaining

DSCF0188

It was snowing heavily. I like to look at snow from my room's window but I can't tolerate the cold weather when I am outside.

DSCF0199

We had a fun snowball fight and another reason that I love snow is we can build snowman! This must be the weirdest looking snowman I have ever built. It is a little out-of-shape but it still looks cute right? :p

DSCF0216

The city of Frankfurt does not have many attractions (Please correct me if I am wrong) and so I visited the same places again. We went to Frankfurt Cathedral and Roemer Square.

Along the way to Roemer Square, we stopped by this toy shop and I had fun exploring my new love. Focusing is great and the camera takes nice close up shots. And...The best part is the Fujifilm X100S is user-friendly and easy to use for clueless DSLR users like me. I have frustrations with my Nikon D5100 because most of the photos I took are usually out of focus and the images are not very sharp. I know it is not the camera issue but problems with the user. Haha!

Our next stop was Eiserner Steg. There is many famous love lock bridges in the world and we should start this trend in Singapore too! The idea is for lovers to attach their padlocks to the bridge and throw the keys into the river to symbolize everlasting love.

DSCF0265

We have our late lunch at this Italian restaurant which is beside our usual joint Mario & Lino. I like Mario & Lino but the food serve here are as good!

DSCF0266

I attempted B&W photography and they were so nice to let me shoot them at work.

Flying dough.. Haha..

Guest Post: Top 5 Shore Excursions in the Caribbean.

This guest post is contributed by Catherine Lavinia

Top 5 Shore Excursions in the Caribbean

If it’s not the climate, the beaches and the fantastic local culture that attracts you to holidays in the Caribbean, the shore excursions on offer with a cruise in this corner of the world should be enough to cement the deal.

Whether you step on the deck of the Liberty Of The Seas and head for the West Caribbean, or you choose the Oasis of the Seas megaship for your sojourn in paradise, Caribbean cruises are notorious for the range and quality of the shore excursions on offer. Here’s five of the best:

Scuba Diving in Bonaire

As part of a beautiful cruise in the South Caribbean, you will have the fortune of mooring in Kralendijk, on the island of Bonaire.

Rated as being one of the best diving sites in the world, it’d be rude not to try the activity once you’re there. The island is surrounded by a protected zone, to ensure the reef is unspoiled and perfectly conserved.

Dunn’s River Falls, Jamaica

Thousands of visitors head here every year to climb the 600-foot waterfalls near Ochi Rios before going for a paddle beneath the falls.

Trinidad & Tobago Carnival

While it’s a bit late to think about this incredible carnival for this year, it’s definitely a short excursion to consider if you’re heading on a cruise that stops at Trinidad & Tobago in the future.

Afternoon Tea in Barbados

What better way to appreciate the history of the Caribbean than supping tea at the Sunbury Plantation in Bridgetown.

Tubing in Dominica

This beautiful island in the Lesser Antilles is a perfect place for watersports such as tubing on the Layou River, which will get the adrenaline pumping as you cascade down the rapids in your personal rubber ring.

Take your pick from the awesome, unforgettable shore excursions that you can enjoy as part of Caribbean cruises and start planning your exotic adventure, today.

Bike the Golden Gate Bridge!

San Francisco, United States

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="584"]DSC_4353 Me @ Golden Gate Bridge[/caption]

It was more than a year ago that I was last here, but it feels nostalgic to visit San Francisco again. It was a great trip this time but there was a tinge of sadness.. Perhaps it was on my last trip that I found out how harsh and tough reality can be. I was terribly homesick on my last trip. I shall not elaborate about it but it makes me realize that I can't be living like a little girl anymore. I will be officially turning 23 in three more months. *OMG* Isn't it amazing how time flies? It may seem that I am enjoying my life traveling around but loneliness can be overwhelming at times especially when I fall sick overseas. Whenever I am feeling down, I will read my blog and I am amazed by the number of places that I have been too. I still have a burning passion for travel and I want to travel and see the world as much as I can.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="584"]DSC_4265 Bym, Travis, Jamie & Me[/caption]

I con convince the rest to join me on a cycling trip to Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito. I felt quite bad cos everyone had terrible muscle aches for the next few days after our cycling trip. We were ridiculously burned trying our best to cycle up San Francisco's famous steep hills.

DSC_4249

We rented our bicycles from Blazzing Saddles at Pier 41 in Fisherman's Wharf. We chose the "deluxe comfort bike" and each bike costs USD36 for the one day rental. But trust me, you will want to get the electric bikes which cost a little bit more (USD69/Day). We overestimated our abilities and the famous San Francisco's famous steep hills proved to be too physically taunting for us. Most of the times when we reach the foot of the slopes, we had to get off and push our bikes up hills. My stamina is not as good as before and this is a wake-up call to hit the gym more often!

Paperworks settled, got our bikes and OFF WE GO~

DSC_4299

It took us 4 hours to reach our final destination Sausalito as we kept stopping to take photos.

.....And some funny and lame shots. Jamie was so engrossed "kicking" me that her shoes fly off. Lucky it didn't hit my face! *Phew*

Nice cool weather & Beach - a good combination to enjoy a great weekend!

Even though it was tiring, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge was a great experience.

Where Sky and Ocean Merge...

The view of the Pacific Ocean was spectacular. It had a calming effect on me and it was a beautiful sight to behold.

DSC_4418

All of us felt a sense of satisfaction when we finally reached the other side of the bridge, Golden Gate Park National Recreation Area. It was an easy downhill ride to Sausalito.

DSC_4424

While on our way to Sausalito, we stopped by at this pier to take some photos. Managed to capture this nice little bird posing for me. :)

DSC_4433

We met this very nice and friendly local couple on the pier and we had a brief chat with them.

DSC_4431

They caught this whole bucket of dungeness crab. I like this kind of lifestyle...taking time off...just chillax and enjoy... Lifestyle in Singapore is too stressful and I doubt we can enjoy such life and not even in the near future.

DSC_4453

We cycled a few more steep slopes before reaching Sausalito and we took the last ferry back. It was too tiring and impossible to cycle back with the amount of energy left. It was invigorating but the beautiful sights along the trip made it all worthwhile. It is a trip you have to do it and you won't regret it!  :)
